In Mathematics, we reviewed several problem areas in the Transformational Geometry Packet and then started on Transformations. Students are expected to use the Mathematical Vocabulary when explaining their work.

  • Flip = Reflection
  • Turn or Spin = Rotation
  • Slide = Translation

In Language Arts, we started a new assignment called "All About Me". Rough copy will be due next Wednesday April 4th, 2018. Students can choose whatever format they want to use to create their project. Some examples: song, story, Google Slides, Prezi, poem, rap, artwork, picture. Once decided they need to write their format on the top of their rough copy.

They are to include:
  • 3 things unique about me
  • 3 things I want to be
  • 3 things about my family and/or friends

In UOI today, we completed watching the video on different types of government and the students completed their graphics organizer on the three main types of government, any specific governments, who's in charge, how do they make decisions and how do they function?

If you would like to see the video again here is the link:

Have a great evening!

As a reminder: St.Jude's Academy is now affiliated with an official soccer club called St. Jude's FC. Students of St.Jude are given a 33% discount that will allow them to join the club and play competitively with other soccer clubs this spring and summer (starting most likely April to September). The students will be working with excellent coaches and going to competitions on the weekend. Practices will be held (most likely) right after school twice a week. In April, besides the soccer field, the students will have a chance to play in our official soccer dome! I think this is a great opportunity!! The students have been given forms (I can e-mail extras), they should try to submit the form as soon as possible.

First Day Back Monday March 26th

Hello Everyone,

Today, the students and I spent some time getting to know each other. We had an excellent day with no issues. Thank you to all the parents who came and greeted me. It was nice to meet you all. For those parents unable to make it, I look forward to seeing you soon.

Homework/Reminders
Math: March Break Transformational Geometry packet if not completed
Spelling: Study Lesson #22 Book E or Book F for test Tuesday March 27th
Tomorrow is Sibling Picture Day. Please ensure students are in their full dress uniform

For Math we worked on a coordinate grid mystery puzzle and I gave March Break Transformational Geometry packets to those who were away. Any student who has not completed their March Break Math Homework will need to work on it tonight for homework.

We began our new UOI unit called "Vote. It's the Right Thing to Do!" by examining our newspaper articles. First, we did a "Think, Pair, Share" and the students discussed what country their article was from, what type of government was shown and what similarities or differences there were. Then the students meet back in their table groups to share their results. The group secretary is creating a chart with the different aspects of each government and the presenter will share those with the class tomorrow. Then our articles will be stapled to our bulletin board to create a collage background for our new unit.

Lastly, students are coming home with marking that Ms. Khan completed. The UOI duo-tangs do not need to come back. Please return spelling books.

As a reminder: St.Jude's Academy is now affiliated with an official soccer club called St. Jude's FC. Students of St.Jude are given a 33% discount that will allow them to join the club and play competitively with other soccer clubs this spring and summer (starting most likely April to September). Introducing Mrs. Marie Downey

Hello and Welcome Back!
Mrs. Marie Downey

I hope everyone has had an awesome March Break.  I am Mrs. Marie Downey and I will be teaching Ms. Khan's Grade 5 classroom. This post is to provide you with some information about me!

I took my first BA over 30 years ago at a small private college in New Brunswick, where I met and married my wonderful husband, Russell. We have lived in several locations, including spending 6 years residing in Virginia Beach, Virginia, where my husband served in the Persian Gulf War. We have 3 wonderful adult children, a daughter and identical twin boys. After my sons had grown, I returned to school to fulfill my lifelong dream of becoming a public school teacher. I graduated in 2013 with my second BA, majoring in Science & Tech Studies and French. Lastly, I graduated in 2014 with my Bachelor of Education Degree in Elementary Education.

Since then, I was an Occasional Teacher in New Brunswick for 2 years, often teaching Grade 5. Then I moved with my children to Ontario, where I have worked as a French teacher in 2 other private schools, 1 of which was an IB school. My daughter and son are attending Sheridan College, enrolled in the Honour's Bachelor of Game Design, and we currently reside in Oakville, Ontario.

I look forward to meeting everyone on Monday March 26th.

See you soon!

Math Monday (lots of it!)

Hello parents and students,

As a reminder: St.Jude's Academy is now affiliated with an official soccer club called St. Jude's FC. Students of St.Jude are given a 33% discount that will allow them to join the club and play competitively with other soccer clubs this spring and summer (starting most likely April to September). I think this is a great opportunity!! The students have been given forms (I can e-mail extras), they should try to submit the form as soon as possible.

In math today, we began by taking up the questions from the Show What you Know and reviewed tree diagrams and outcome tables.

Next, the students worked a review that will be similar to the quiz tomorrow.
1. There will be probability questions were they have to estimate the theoretical probability (multiply the top - numerator- with the same number as bottom -denominator). Here is a video link if they stuck.
2.There will be a question were they have to create an outcome chart.
3. Lastly, there will be a question where they have to complete a tree diagram.

Note: The students will be marked on their calculations, probability (fractions), and final sentences. The students should also know percent as well (out of a hundred).

In UOI, the students the practiced their projects for tomorrow with the showcase. Some people adjusted their written component for the final project.

Friday Frenzy

Hello parents and students,

We had a very busy Friday leading into the weekend. We began with an awards assembly. In our class Suhana and Rishabh won the awards for being open-minded. Congratulations both of you!

We also have BIG news. St.Jude's Academy is now affiliated with an official soccer club called St.

In math, we began by taking up the homework. We also did some examples as a class all together.

1. In a bag of jelly beans 4/40 are orange. There is an equal chance of getting blue, yellow and red. What is the theoretical probability of getting each number?

orange = 4 jellybeans
So I have 36 jellybeans still left but I need an equal number of                                          blue, yellow and red.
   36÷3= 12 each                So I have 12 blue, 12 yellow and 12 red.

2. I have jellybeans in a jar. If I pull out 4 red, 4 yellow and 2 blue in 10 turns. What is the theoretical probability of getting red if I take 100 turns (put in fractions and percent)?

   =        40
10   x10   100
I multiplied the bottom by 10 to I have to multiply the top as well.
Percentage is out of a 100 so probability is 40%.

The students then learned about tree diagrams. Here is a video that can further explain those if they get stuck. For the weekend, I have given extra math review homework (show what you know). We will be doing more review on Monday and then the quiz is on Tuesday. The answers for the review as well as extra practice are posted below.

Please note: You do not have to complete question 5d on the Show Your Work -- last page

In UOI, the students all worked on their projects. Most people are either finished or at almost finished, on Monday I will give students the final chance to fix their projects before the big day.

In language, the students started writing their final reflection. For the final reflection the students have to answer 4 questions in depth about changes in their health; the students needed to use their daily summaries, tracker as well as the answers to their questions to create this final reflections. The answers must be 2-4 full sentences, however the students are allowed to add more. Additionally, the students may make their reflection creative by presenting it the way they want with pictures (hand-drawn or taken), typed-answers and etc. This is due Monday.

Reminders/Homework

Probability Thursday

Hello parents and students,

Wow, what a change in the weather and here we thought winter was over! But this did not keep the excitement down for the students!

We began the day by working on math and taking up our answers in round discussion. In the new lesson for today we covered 3 topics, here are the notes in case the students need help.

1. Theoretical and Experimental Probability
Theoretical Probability: The outcome you expect (favourable).
ex. theoretical probability of getting heads is 1 out of 2 (1/2).
Experimental Probability: The actual outcome (the number of times it occurs).
ex. in class, the experimental probability was 6 out of 10.

2. Probability as Fractions
**Always start by making the fraction true.
- you may use multiples as long as you multiple by the same number!

3. Probability as Percent **it helps to go in order
1. Use words:
- She have a 3 out of 1 chance of getting orange flavoured water. So taking orange in unlikely.
2. Use a fraction:
-Probability of getting orange 3/15 or its multiple 1/5
3. Use decimals:
-1/5 (you need to multiple 5 x 20 to get 100, so then you multiply the numerator by 20 as well) = 2/100 or 0.20
4. Use percent:
0.2 (x100) = 20%

For UOI, the students worked on their projects. Here are some pictures of the progress.

Reminders/Homework

  • Math: Complete the worksheets on probability (6). Probability quiz tentative day Monday, March 5.
