Probability Wednesday

Dear parents and students,

I hope everyone is enjoying this new spring weather we are having. The geese on the soccer field sure look like they are.

We started the day off with math. We began by starting our new unit probability. Today, it was all about describing the likelihood of an outcome (chance of something happening). The students learned how to use descriptive words such as likely, unlikely, certain, and impossible. They also learned how to use a table to multiple and add to find the probable outcomes and probability numbers. Here is a video that they can use to better understand it (link). All students were able to finish their homework in class for math. Probability is a small unit we will most likely have a quiz next Tuesday.

In UOI, the students worked on their projects, here are some pictures of the designers.

In language, we looked over the students reflections and trackers. Thursday night will be their last day to track and reflect on their journals. On Friday, the students will be creating their final reflection on the entire process.

Survey Monday

Hello parents and students,

We had a really focused day getting all of our work done! We began with completing our quiz on the Human Body. After the quiz, we discussed the importance of using knowledge from our stations/worksheets and how this information will help us in our project. We also analyzed the questions in the quiz; all the questions were about function and component of the different body systems so I could really grasp the missing links in the students’ learning. In UOI, the students then completed their research information graphic organizer. Afterwards, we did our 1-minute brainstorms. Before the end of the lesson, the students all created their final ideas with a list of materials they need to get.

In math, the students had a chance today to go around and complete their surveys. Tomorrow, we will get a chance to analyze our data.

I also had a chance to look at the student’s reflective journal and as a class we discussed how the students should be adding information into the journal. They need to make sure to write a summary and reflects on their healthy/non-healthy choices and then they have to answer at least 2 questions.

Homework/Reminders

  • ·      Math: surveys must be completed by tomorrow
  • ·      Language: complete reflective journal and tracker, spelling workbook due Friday
  • ·      UOI: get materials for project
  • ·      Information: soccer forms due tomorrow
  •      Aftercare payments due today

Have a great night and see you tomorrow,

Ms.Khan

Anti-Bullying Thursday

Hello parents and students,

Today was pink day for anti-bullying! And this morning, we had a wonderful experience watching Cinderfella, a one-person show about being kind, trying your best, and working hard. Here are some pictures from our sea-of-pink and the show today.

Next, the students completed their OWA post-assessments on persuasive announcements. This time, the students had an option to select any topic of their choice and they had to persuade the school in an announcement. There are some very creative and funny announcements and the students worked very hard. Here are pictures of the creative writers.

In math, the students were given their survey project. They had the option of creating a 1-variable or a 2-variable question regarding healthy eating or exercise. The students their decided their intervals and sample sizes. The students were also given option to complete their survey on Google form and I showed the students how to do that. Over the weekend, some students will be bringing home their surveys for sampling. The surveying should be completed by end of day Monday.

In UOI, the students checked their review sheet answers. Here is a link to the answers in case the students need to check it or misplace their copy. The new summative: Body World Exhibit was introduced as well today. The students will be creating models of body systems, this is an in-class summative. However, this weekend the students can research some ideas online and discuss their ideas with you. We will continue by researching the body system in detail on body so the students need to bring in their devices if they can.

Writers Wednesday

Hello parents and students,

I hope that you had a great evening so far. We are already half-way through the week. I am really hoping that the weather clears up so that our ski trip on Friday is not affected.

In math today, we discussed surveys and our final summative project for this unit. The students will be getting the summative tomorrow and we will be working on it next week. For surveys, the students have learned about bias (unfair information or results), primary data (collected through observation, measurement, or surveys), and secondary information (collected from books and online -- other people's results). The students also worked on creating questions and making inferences based on data.

In language, the students wrote a practice OWA for persuasive announcements. We put a success criteria on the board that the students could follow in order to insure that they were meeting all the requirements of the rubric. Afterwards, students evaluated each other and gave feedback about improvements. Here is the success criteria anchor chart. Tonight, the students and parents can review the practice OWA to prepare for the final assessment tomorrow.

In UOI, the students worked with their groups that created a review sheet of 25 questions. I have given the students the review sheet and the students have to complete the questions tonight for tomorrow. I have also introduced the new Body World Summative to the students, the students will get the package for that tomorrow as well.

Jumping Tuesday

Hello parents and students,

I hope everyone is having a great rain-free Tuesday. It was a wonderful day back to school. We started the day with math and reviewing coordinates, I have also signed off on all the pictures and the students have tonight to colour it. The students have to remember to use different material, shading, lines, colour etc.

Then in math, we learned all about scatter plots and trends in graphs. Here is a video in case the students get stuck (it is very in depth and more detailed than the students require).

Next, we completed our spelling test and our literature circles which have been marked for the students. We will be having a final project for Hatchet but I have given an extra week for any students that feel that they need to catch up in the book. The students were also given their journals for the "Healthy New You Project". Every night, the students have to summarize their day and then answer two questions from the question list, by the end of the project they will have answered all questions. Along the way, the students can also take pictures of the changes they have made and anything else they want to share which will be added to the final reflection at the end.

Additionally, today we reviewed our pre-assessment for the OWA; we discussed the rubric together and created a success criteria. The students then graded their pre-assessment OWA. Tomorrow, we will complete a practice OWA and then on Thursday, the students will complete their post-assessment for the persuasive speech OWA.

In UOI, we reviewed the circulatory system worksheet and then discussed the nervous system. Tomorrow, the students will be creating review questions with their group (5 altogether). These 5 questions will be put into a review sheet (25 questions) for the students. Next Monday, they have a quiz based on 10 questions from that review sheet.

At the end of the day today, we got a chance to participate in the Jump Rope for Heart, here are pictures from the event with a special message at the bottom of the blog.
